Opal Dean Alred, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Athens, Alabama, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born and raised in Alabama, Opal lived a life marked by kindness, humility, and devotion. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Alred, who passed in 2007, and by two of her sons, Keith Alred and Dewayne Alred. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Claude and Lula Dutton; two brothers, Rubert Dutton and Levon Dutton; and sister, Jane Blair.
She is survived by her devoted children, Vickie Blagburn (Blake) and Phillip Alred (Shelia). She leaves behind a cherished legacy through her grandchildren: Chelsey Culver, Zach Alred, Josh Alred, Braden Blagburn, Shannon Alred, Vince Alred, and Courtney Buckelew, as well as many great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy. Also surviving her are brothers, Gwyn Dutton, Teddy Dutton, and Dole Dutton, along with sisters, Sharon Logston, Doris Murphy, and Brenda Warren.
A long-time resident of Decatur, Opal was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church, where she found great joy in worship and fellowship. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her through both joys and trials. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, tending to her home, and could often be found in her front yard, happily picking up leaves. She and her husband, Gene, also loved to spend time traveling together, making memories that her family will always treasure.
Opal’s life was a testament to selflessness, quiet strength, and a deep love for her family. She will be deeply missed by her family, her church, and all who were fortunate to know her.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Central Baptist Church.
