Lowell Thomas Legg, 89, passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on January 27, 2026. Tom was born December 22, 1936, to Milford and Grace Legg. He was a graduate of Speake High, class of 1955.
Tom married the love of his life, Wanda Willine Legg, on July 23, 1955. They lived a life devoted to each other until her passing on February 2, 2023. Tom spent his life devoted to his precious wife, or “Mom,” as he liked to call her, and his family. He was a one of a kind husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family meant everything to him, and his love for them was evident in the way he showed up, cared deeply, and remained a steady presence throughout their lives. His love was steady and unconditional.
Tom, affectionately known as Papaw Tom to all who knew him, was an avid cattleman throughout his life. He was a long time member of the Lawrence County Cattleman’s Association and took great pride in his work. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He retired from Monsanto following 35 years of service. One of his favorite pastimes was sitting in his sun room watching his cows. He enjoyed watching Alabama football and the RFD channel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milford and Grace Legg; his brothers, William Howard Legg, Hoover Legg, and Hoyt Legg; his sisters, Louise Glenn and Betty Garrison; and his beloved wife, Willine Montgomery Legg.
He is survived by his children, Jeff Legg (Donna), Ramona Long (the late Ricky), and Melissa Fleming (Darryl); his grandchildren, Josh Long (Abby), Zach Legg (Cassie), Jake Long (Ashley), Chelsie Hobbs (Jimmy), Caine Fleming (Angela), Annie Long, and Ragan Hill (Jordon); and 16 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Josh Long, Zach Legg, Jake Long, Caine Fleming, Jimmy Hobbs, and Jordon Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Eli Long, Tucker Legg, Kellar Long, Tanner Hobbs, Gage Fleming, Travis Hobbs, Dax Hill, Ryker Fleming, and Rhett Fleming.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers, Jessica Hale, Tina Osborne, and Gayle Sivley. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Amedisys and the nurses who took such good care of Papaw Tom.
