Funeral service for Christopher George "Chris" Waters, age 53, of Trinity, will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Parkway Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alan Compton officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher George Waters on November 7, 2024. Christopher was born August 16, 1971, in Michigan to Willard Irwin Waters, Sr. and Jimmie Faye (Terry) Waters. He was preceded in death by his father.
Christopher came to Alabama with his family when he was only a few weeks old. He attended school in Birmingham, Lawrence County (class of 1991), Calhoun Community College, and the University of North Alabama.
He was known to family and friends as "Chris," "Little Chris," and "Uncle Chris." His hobbies consisted of fishing, cooking, gaming, drawing, artwork, and his most enjoyable, collecting Hot Wheels and Star Wars collectables. With childlike enthusiasm he enjoyed gifting Hot Wheels to children and adults alike, but especially his nephews and great-nephews. A big lovable teddy bear with the heart of a lion...he loved his country and his family.
After high school he enlisted in the Alabama National Guard, and was activated for Homeland Defense after the 9/11 terrorists attack. Completing a year-long mandatory activation, Chris, like many young men and women, enlisted full time Army. He left Alabama and was stationed in Germany for combat training.
Chris' service in the U. S. Army included three combat tours in Afghanistan and during Operation Enduring Freedom/Global War on Terrorism. During rotations back to Germany Chris participated in United Nations sanctioned training exercises with NATO troops in Romania and Germany known as "Peacekeepers."
The poem "Blank Check" written by an unknown author sums it up . . . "'A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to the 'United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'"
Chris' absence resonates within our family as he will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his mother, Jimmie Waters; brother, Willard "J.R." Waters, Jr.; sister, Sharon Engle (Scott); and a host of extended family and friends.
